THE FORTRESS OF TSARI MALI GRAD AND THE WHITE ISKAR VALLEY
The fortress of Tsari Mali Grad was built in the 4th century during the time of the late Roman Empire under the rule of Emperor Valent. Situated some 50 km from teh city of Sofia on the hill of St. Spas it overlooks the entire valley. Besides the dating of the fortress itself, the archeological layers show human activity as far as VII – VI century B.C.
The modern day complex offers a rich experience and a variety of activities – including the hot mineral springs of Belchin Bania. Venture back in time to the Age of Antiquity and find out more about the life of the local ancient people during that period in the authentic ambiance of the fortress of Tsari Mali Grad.
Just 20 minute drive south from the fortress takes us to a beautiful eco trail – the Valley of Beli Iskar River. Starting just outside the village of Beli Iskar, at the foot of the mountain, the trail follows the river upstream for about 7 km. A total of 13 bridges have been constructed along the trail, providing for a magnificent overview of the might of the river, especially in the springtime.
It takes some good 2h 30m – 3h of calm walking to complete this closed type trail, but a crafty resting area has been constructed half way trough the trail, where you can enjoy a delicious lunch in the nature. This tour is a great combination of historical and natural activities that make up for a fulfilling day in one of Bulgaria’s most famous mountains.
