THE SKAKAVITSA WATERFALL AND SAPAREVA BANYA
The Skakavitsa Waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Rila Mountain in Bulgaria. It is part of Rila National Park and is located on the Skakavitsa River. The waterfall is situated on approximately 2,000 m above the sea level and the water is falling down from 70 m.
The Skakavitsa Waterfall is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the area. The waterfall is accessible after a short hike from Skakavitsa Hut – the oldest hut in Bulgaria, built in 1922.
The town of Sapareva Banya is famous for its hot mineral and clear mountain water, as well as the only geyser in Europe that is located in the town center. During hydrological researches in 1957, hot water and steam with temperature of 102°C were found 73 meters underground. The water column periodically pushes hot water with height of 18 m above the ground.
