The 11 centuries old monument is considered one of the cultural symbols of Bulgaria. Situated at the foot of Vitosha Mountain it dates as far back as late X century. The incredibly detailed layers of murals are one of the main reasons for the church to be included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list in 1979.
About an hour and a half upstream the Boyana River takes you to the highest waterfall on Vitosha Mountain – The Boyana Waterfall. The 40m fall is a magnificent sight that can easily be spotted from Sofia during the spring. A favorite location of all nature lovers from Sofia.
Back in Boyana, just a few minutes ride away is the National History Museum – home of the famous Thracian Treasure from Panagyurishte. A 22K Golden replica is on display at all times, but when the real exhibition is in Bulgaria, it is a must see, since it is considered one of the most beautiful and sophisticated golden treasures in the world.
